El elemento clave de toda camisa es el canesú, una pieza situada en la zona de los hombros a la que le cose el cuerpo de la camisa. Si el canesú no se adapta correctamente al cuerpo, el resto de la prenda tampoco lo hará.
El canesú es una pieza vital de la camisa, pues proporciona un refuerzo adicional a la sección que sujeta el peso del conjunto de la prenda. Además, oculta las costuras de los hombros y las mantiene alejadas de la parte superior del hombro, donde resultarían incómodas debido a la fricción. También permite que la espalda y el delantero de la camisa se amolden a los hombros del portador sin necesidad de pinzas.

El canesú es un detalle de diseño básico que puede utilizarse como simple adorno o para proporcionar vuelo a la sección inferior de la prenda, mediante la incorporación de pliegues o pinzas.

Hay diferentes tipos de canesú. La camisa puede presentar un único canesú a la espalda, uno en el delantero y otro en la espalda, o un canesú cortado en dos piezas. Las razones por las que se corta el canesú en dos piezas son muy distintas. Por ejemplo, es posible que sea necesario hacerlo para poder cortar de forma distinta cada mitad, con el objetivo de que el canesú se amolde a la perfección a unos hombros que presentan un tamaño distinto. En caso de que la camisa sea de rayas, es posible que se tenga que cortar el canesú para que la costura del delantero discurra paralela a las rayas del tejido. Y la tercera razón obedece únicamente al deseo de ahorrar en material, puesto que para cortar dos piezas grandes de canesú se necesita más tela que para cortar cuatro piezas pequeñas.
